Knitting Woolly Socks

>> Friday, December 31, 2010

I have been busy busting my yarn stash this fall and winter and felt what a great thing to share on FFG@H. This year my MIL only suggested a few things for a gift ideas for her and one of them was a pair of my hand knitted socks. *grin* I was so thankful I had some sock yarn in my stash and I got busy.

I have been knitting for ohhh what seems like forever. I learned from my mom in mid to late elementary. And then became a avid knitter in junior high. But in all honesty I didn't take the leap to learn socks till about 6 or 7 years ago. I was scared of the heel. Now I feel silly but it did help to see someone knit the heel. I am a visual learner. And now I LOVE knitting socks and it is very therapeutic knitting in the round. I am hoping this up coming year to try some fancy lace knitted ones. Up until now I have enjoyed using smart yarn which is computerized striped dyed yarn. It makes the stripes and I don't have to think about it. *grin*

I have found these socks amazing. They are not too thick and they are very long lasting. My family loves them and I have a list of orders from them now that they see me knitting them again.

This years knitting goals are..... I want to make a drop spindle with two CD's and I want to learn how to knit two socks at the same time on two circular needles. If you want to learn how go....

If you want to find all kinds of neat patterns.( a lot for free) I suggest to join http://www.ravelry.com/ a online knitters and crocheters community. I have had so much fun there. If you do join look for me Canadagirl. And befriend me too, *grin*.

Hi, Mary! I'm reading your post as the rain patters down and rolls of thunder split the air. In Chicago. In December!?! :)

(That was a side note.) I love the socks. As I've said before, I just don't do needlework, and am envious of those who do. I find it fascinating! Good for you for using up what you have on hand!

Happy New Year!

Yay, Mary-Girl! So glad you joined in today! I'm also glad you shared about your sock-knitting...I think I'd like to give that a try soon. I haven't knitted on DPNs since, oh, 25 years ago or so, but I'm sure it'll come right back to me. That's why I chose to do my hexi's (on hold til the gloves are done) and the fingerless gloves with patterns that used standard needles, until I get my knitting-abilities back up to speed. I had to watch 5 YouTube videos of the Russian bindoff method before I found something that clearly showed how to pick up and knit stitches "from behind." That's how my sister's fingerless gloves are finished, and it's really a pretty-looking edge, and stays nicely stretchy. But it was difficult for me to first of all SEE (i am NOT a visual learner), and then to make my yarn somehow "match" what the video teacher's yarn was doing! I just couldn't seem to make mine look, on the needles, like hers did! I ended up "freeze-framing" her video, in about 2 second intervals, and proceeding centimeter by centimeter through the stitch! Once I got it, it wasn't hard, and I love the result. I have the second glove on the needles, but just 3 rows of the cuff so far, and now it's on hold until after this party.

I am soooooo looking forward to about, oh, January 4th oir 5th, when we are cleaned up from the party and all the holiday decor is put away, and I have a crackly fire in the fireplace and my knitting bag by my favorite chair! I'll finish sister's gloves, then get to work on hexis again. And when I'm sick of hexis, maybe I'll grab my DPNs and start some socks! (I'll call you for yarn advice, first, LOL!)

Love you, dearest! Happy New Year!

Beautiful socks, Mary! I love making socks, but don't have the patience for that thin, fingering weight yarn. I tried it once and got bored before I finished half the sock, so ripped it all out. Now I just make socks for the boys that they can wear with their winter boots -- nice and thick and warm. The last ones I made were from worsted weight alpaca. So warm! That's why I haven't gotten around to making mukluks for them this year. They haven't really needed them with those warm socks.

What kind of yarn are you using that makes such long lasting socks? I need to order some size 10 circular needles, and will order more yarn. Also, like you, have been wanting to learn to knit two socks at the same time on circular needles. I have the needles, but just haven't taken the time to learn. Thank you for those great links! I promised my son I'd get back to the hexigons for his bedspread very soon, so that's on my list, too. But, I can only do that in spurts. If I push myself too long on hexigons, I get sick of knitting and put it away for months.
I will friend you on revelry. That's a wonderful site!

Happy New Year!

Making socks are so much fun. I enjoy knitting, but crocheting is definitely my thing :)

I like your socks...the colors are so lovely!

Have a joyful New Year dear friend!

Mary your socks are beautiful! I had an aunt ( she was from Canada!) who knit socks. I remember because each winter she would come to our house in Washington to stay the winter "where it was much warmer" and she knit all winter. Sadly I did not learn from her! But my favorite pair of socks each year was the pair she made for me.

I have tried so hard to learn how to knit (I'm a crocheter). I just can't seem to make uniform stitches. I had dreams of making socks and mittens.

I like your header, "Busy hands make for happy hearts." I've been reading some past posts and enjoyed them.

Blessings on your new year.

Those socks look so nice. If I knitted, I would knit myself a pair. :) I'll have to check out that website, since you said it has crocheters on there too. Thanks for the link. :)
