Simple Pleasures~ Reading The Little House Books

>> Thursday, January 20, 2011

I am going to start off my reflections in "Simple Pleasures" meme with something that I have enjoyed over the many years in my little homeschool. It starts when my boys have read through all the I Can Read books, Frog and Toad books, Owl books. Then, I have them read The Little House On the Prairie books with me. In the beginning (well for quite awhile) I read a paragraph and then I have them read a paragraph. Back and forth we go for the alloted time set on the kitchen timer. By the time the child gets through all the books in the series their reading is pretty smooth. I have really enjoyed this and building their reading fluency and heart ties with mom. I am getting VERY close to starting this ritual with my youngest boy. I can't wait to start. I am thinking it might be in a week or so. *grin* I can't wait to start.

I'm new to your blog and found you through Simple Pleasures. It's my favorite "party" on the block, and I'm glad to see a new face.

You hit my HUGE hot button and pleasure with your post this morning. Not only am I a lover of reading aloud to and along with your children, but I'm a huge Laura Ingalls Wilder fan as well.

We read them all to our daughters, and they have both read them themselves as well. Many, many happy memories rush to my heart whenever I think of them.

And can I say THANK YOU as the Christian mother of daughters for your determination to raise Godly men? I am trying to raise Godly women to go along with them.

Oh I just love the Little House books. I am trying to find the entire collection, so that I can share them with my grandblessings in the years to come.

The "Little House" books are great! I used to LOVE reading those when I was a young girl.

Your reading program with your boys sounds like it is progressing nicely. What a blessing these sons have - to have a mom who enjoys taking the time to read with them patiently and lovingly. :)

I have this whole set of books in hardback. Have read them many, many times. I'm thinkg my boys would think I was torturing them if I tried to get them to read any one of these books. :/ Best wishes to you and yours, Tammy

Hi, Mary, and welcome to Simple Pleasures. So glad to see you here. You've captured the essence of what this meme is all about. And, oh my goodness! The Little House books are some of my all-time favorite books. I have the whole set and read them all to my daughter, who is now 24. Reading these together at bedtime proved to be the highlight of our day. Such rich writing.

Hope to see you here often.

I often wonder what Laura Ingalls Wilder would think if she knew how popular her books still are. Would warm her heart that mothers, sons and daughters read them together.

What a lovely tradition. I am sure it takes much diligence too.

I read that series to Caroline last fall. I enjoy them more every time I read them. I wonder if she would tolerate reading them again next year. She is close to reading fluently. I never thought of saving them for her to read.

We too have the whole Little House set. My oldest daughter loved these books and is the reason we ended up buying the set. Definitely a simple pleasure.

I have never had the pleasure of reading these books...I have them mind you, but my boys were not interested...so I put the aside :(

But now, I am so looking forward to sit down and bringing them out again. Thank you dear friend for sharing them with me. As soon as I am done with Wind in the Willows, I am beginning this series...then I'll stop by your lovely place and talk about them with you :)

You know I have NEVER read any of the Little House books. I know, shame on me! You would think I have being such a huge fan of the television show, wait.....maybe that was the problem.

I like your idea of reading aloud together. I just may have to try that with my youngest. He needs some help on his fluency AND I'll finally read the books!

Thanks for the idea!

Blessings!

I have read some of the others books you made mention of it to, and Mark read almost this whole entire set to her when she was a little girl...we took turns reading different books to her.
What a wonderful meme this is, isn't it, I love it!

I am a seasoned preschool teacher. One of my families has six children aged 4-20. I have taught each of them, and then the mom goes on to home school them. I admire her and you for the dedication it takes.http://lindaoconnell.blogspot.com/

What a wonderful way to teach your sons- by nurturing love for family and reading at the same time!
Such a lovely inspiration :-)
God bless you in your beautiful and important vocation of raising godly sons.

I loved the books when I was a girl, loved reading them to my own daughters and to my students when I taught school, and now my grandbabies are old enough to enjoy hearing them read aloud.
So glad you stopped by my blog to tell me what books you like...I love Emilie Barnes and Stormie Omartian too!

Mary-Girl! I have many precious memories of nights in the boys' room, reading them the "Little House" books for bedtime story.

No surprise, the favorite (their's AND mine) is Farmer Boy. :-D

Love you much!
