Learning and Life

As my earlier post showed it is a time of dreaming, reflecting and planning. I am looking at what we have gotten done and what we still have yet to do. It seems that I always pick a lot more read aloud's than I can get done. We are In the second book of the of the MacNeil's adventure trilogy, "Under A Shooting Star" by Maxine Trottier. It is a series of historical novels in the setting of very end of the 1700's and the early 1800's. The second book is during the year of 1812. So far, like the first book the boys don't want me to stop once I start reading it. It really gives a flavor of what it would have been like for the early settlers of Canada. I highly recommend it.
I am starting to get ready to make my list of what we need to continue on in our little homeschool. I have to admit I don't have such a cut and dry start and finish in our school the last few years. School the last few years has blended one into the next. When one of my boys finish their math books we move onto the next. We are doing some catch up in language arts. I am trying to make sure the basics are covered and we have a solid foundation. This coming year I feel like I need to dive more fully into the Charlotte Mason style that I have steered a bit off of. I joined the Charlotte Mason Online Organizer and hope to get that all figured out and going asap. I have to admit that I want us to just continue on with our Canadian History curriculum. We have been enjoying it so much and I don't want to try to rush through what we have left just because we are not done with it this year. So I think we will continue on.

I tried the CM organizer for awhile, but I felt too rushed...and I stopped. Now I do CM, but in a very relaxed way, almost like un-schooling.
Praying that everything goes well... enjoy your precious moments with your boys.

It always warms my mommy heart when my kids beg me to keep reading, which happens about once a week. You are on the right path for your boys. And I appreciate all the thoughtful comments you have left lately. Thank you!!
We have been doing the very same thing, Mary. I would be hard-pressed to decide what/where we are in any given school year, and know only when oldest DS is slated for college. I'm not stressing about it at all, amazingly enough, and just enjoying the process. I'm glad you're enjoying the rhythym of it as well.
Just ordered another slew of books, and we're beginning anew and in earnest next week. It's been sooooo hard to get back to focused schooling, but we persevere. :)
Have a lovely afternoon!!
love,

I'm going to check out that link. I would really like to use more of a Charlotte Mason approach with these last two little ones of mine.
I love the organizer and will continue to use it, although like you mentioned I have veered away from wholeheartedly doing CM. I'm getting back though! I think I'm coming to the realization that I just have a blended style of homeschooling.
Blessings!

ps I think you mentioned setting a timer when you take turns reading aloud with your son through the Little House books. Do you mind telling me how long you set your timer for?
Hi, Mary,
You know, I like the sense of 'relaxed homeschooling' that comes through your comments here. And your Canadian study sounds wonderful. I'd probably be hard put to end it, too.
Even though I don't to CM per se, I love that approach, especially the nature study and appreciation part. Sounds like a perfect match with the outdoor life you're able to live.
God bless,
Wendy
Sounds like things are going well. I hope you get going on the type of routine you want, that always helps. :)

Hi Mary-Girl! Gosh, I miss you! Responsibilities to my parents have been picking up here, as have ministry opps for friends (hosting and hospitality, which are my passions), and I've been away from blogland for a bit. I know you understand...
I so appreciate your thoughts here in this post, and know that feeling of just wanting to "be lost" in a really good book, and not worry so much about scheduling, and course lists, credits, etc. This last year has brought such HUGE changes to our homeschool...but I realize that it is because I am rapidly approaching the end of this amazing journey that God has been SO kind to allow me to take. My boys are not boys anymore. They're men now. Young men, in my 50 year old eyes, but not boys. And they are choosing their life-paths, and starting to make their way.
We still enjoy a read aloud here and there, and I treasure that! But life goes in chapters (seasons), and I always want to be open to turning that page to open the new and latest chapter, even though I've adored the one we've been in.
The blizzard is quite an experience...it's so dark now that I can't see much, but the wind has been howling and the snow is just coming in sideways. I don't even know how deep it really is because of all the drifting. Needless to say, we're not going ANYWHERE tomorrow!
I love and miss you...would love to call you soon to catch up!
